Our Programs

ABA

ABA (applied behaviour analysis) therapy includes strategies that target socially significant behaviour. This can include verbal skills, play skills, social skills, academic skills, cooperation skills, self-help skills, toileting skills, and/or problem behaviour. ABA involves breaking down skills into smaller more manageable tasks, and then teaching each task one at a time using positive reinforcement (e.g., praise, reward). Each skill is taught in a methodical and systematic way which allows children to gain basic learning skills first, laying the foundation for the acquisition of more advanced skills in the future. Sunshine Learning Centre Inc. uses the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS) to assess your child’s skill level in areas like academic skills, self-help skills, gross motor skills, and many others. Once your child has completed their initial ABLLS assessment, a program is developed and tailored to meet the individual needs of your child.

OAP Funding

We are pleased to be able to offer ABA/IBI services to families who are receiving the Core Clinical Services under the Ontario Autism Program (OAP). Our clinical psychologist Dr. Amanda Morgan (Azarbehi) provides supervision to all of our families using insurance and our Board-Certified Behaviour Analysis provides supervision to all of our families using OAP funding. Both practitioners ensure that goals are being met successfully and that all programming and documentation needed to maintain funding is being completed properly and accurately.

Behaviour Consultation

Sometimes a family needs support to address specific issues at home, community, or in the school environment. Sunshine provides consultation services to help support families in addressing challenging behaviours, developing independence and self-help skills, and community-based skills. Sunshine also offers school support in assisting families with IEP goals and development as well as in ensuring families are accessing the support their child needs in the school environment.

Assessment and Diagnosis

Sunshine Learning Centre offers assessment and diagnosis options in partnership with our clinical psychologist Dr. Amanda Morgan (Azarbehi). Comprehensive flat-rate assessments are available including: child developmental, psycho-educational or adult mental health, vocational, & autism spectrum screening (ADOS). With our on site psychometrist, we are able to maintain flexible appointment times and a small wait-list for assessments.

Life Skills Program

Utilizing teaching methodology from the PEERS® program as well as the Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS), this program is geared specifically towards teenagers and young adults with the goal of working on the development of important self-help, independence, and life skills. Conducted in 1-to-1 format and facilitated by our trained staff, our life skills program focuses on skills such as: cooking, cleaning, laundry, using public transportation, healthy living, hygiene, and many others. This program is offered in blocks depending on the number of goals, with each session focusing on a different skill.

Social-Emotional Group Program

Our social-emotional group program offers children ages 6-14 an opportunity to learn skills related to emotional regulation, social interaction, understanding emotions of others, using coping strategies, and building relationships. Through using the evidence based online curriculum, Emotional ABCs ®, children are taught in a group setting how to process their thoughts and examine their choices in emotionally charged situations. The Emotional ABC’s group program occurs once a week during after school hours (4:30-5:30) and is under the supervision of a Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst.

BCBA and RBT supervision

Our Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst, Jese Duran, is qualified to provide RBT and BCBA supervision. Supervision is done remotely using behavioural skills training (BST). Jese Duran completed her 8-hour supervision training which allows her to provide ethical, meaningful, and effective supervision. Jese provides an enjoyable, interactive, and organized supervision structure. Supervision includes reviewing task list items, the code of ethics, completing role play scenarios, and completing mock exam questions.
